How Long Does a Voiceover Project Actually Take?
Turnaround time is one of the first questions clients ask, and it's a fair one. Whether you're working toward a campaign launch, a product release, or a training rollout, knowing when to expect your files matters.
The honest answer is that it depends. But that's not very useful on its own, so here's a breakdown of what actually affects the timeline and what you can realistically expect.
The factors that affect turnaround time
No two voiceover projects are exactly alike, and a few key variables determine how long a project takes from start to finish.
Script length. A 30-second commercial spot and a 45-minute e-learning course are very different asks. Longer scripts take more time to record, edit, and deliver. Word count and finished minute length are the most direct factors in how long a project will take.
Script readiness. This one makes a bigger difference than most clients expect. A finalized, approved script can move into production immediately. A script that's still being revised or waiting on stakeholder approval sits in a holding pattern until it's ready. The clock on turnaround doesn't really start until the script is locked.
Project complexity. A single read with clean delivery and standard formatting is straightforward. A project with multiple character voices, precise pacing requirements, file naming conventions for each line, or specific technical specs takes more time to produce and deliver correctly.
Revision rounds. Most projects include revisions in the quote. If revisions come back quickly and the notes are clear, they turn around fast. If revision requests come in after a few days or require significant re-recording, the timeline extends accordingly.
Live-directed vs. standard delivery. Live-directed sessions can actually speed up the overall timeline because adjustments happen in real time during the session rather than through back-and-forth after delivery. For projects where performance precision matters, a live session can mean faster final delivery.
General timelines by project type
These are general ranges, not guarantees. Every project is quoted individually and timelines are confirmed before work begins.
Short-form commercial or promo (under 60 seconds)
Most short scripts can be turned around within 24 hours once the script is finalized and the project is booked. Same-day delivery is sometimes possible depending on schedule.
Explainer video or corporate narration (1 to 5 minutes)
Typically within 24 hours for recording and delivery. Longer if multiple revision rounds are needed.
E-learning course or long-form narration (5 minutes and up)
Longer projects are usually delivered within 2 to 5 business days depending on total script length, file requirements, and any live-directed sessions involved. Large-scale courses with many individual files may be delivered in batches.
IVR and phone system recordings
Turnaround is similar to short-form work. Individual prompts record and edit quickly. Projects with a high volume of prompts are usually batched and delivered together.
Rush delivery
Rush turnaround may be available depending on current schedule and project length. If you have a hard deadline, include it when you reach out. Accommodating a tight timeline is often possible when the project is scoped and booked early.
What you can do to keep things moving
The fastest projects are the ones where everything is ready on the client side before recording begins. A few things that help:
Send a finalized script. Changes after recording has started can add time and may affect the quote. The closer to final your script is when you reach out, the smoother the process.
Include direction notes upfront. Tone, pacing, any reference examples, pronunciations for brand names or technical terms. The more context provided before recording starts, the less back-and-forth is needed after.
Give clear revision feedback. Specific notes like "can you slow down the second paragraph" or "this line should feel warmer" are much easier to act on than "something feels off." Clear feedback means faster revisions.
Know your deadline. If you have a hard delivery date, say so upfront. That information helps with scheduling and makes sure your project gets the time it needs in the right window.
The short version
Most short to mid-length voiceover projects deliver within 1 to 3 business days. Longer projects take a little more time. Rush delivery is often possible. The biggest delays in voiceover projects almost always come from the script side, not the recording side.
